Green Cars: some ideas from Adrian Flux Insurance Services
So you want a greener car but aren’t sure what to go for? The green car insurance bods at Adrian Flux Insurance Services are covering more and more eco-friendly vehicles. Here are a few ideas to whet your appetite…
First things first: don’t discount traditional petrol or diesel cars. For example, the new Fiat 500 TwinAir has a combined fuel consumption figure nudging 70mpg. With CO2 emissions of only 95 g/km, it qualifies for free road tax and is exempt from the London Congestion Charge. That’s pretty green for a petrol-driven machine! With a top speed of 108mph and a 0-62 of 11 seconds, it’s not too slow either. And the engine sound will bring a fond smile to anyone who remembers the original Fiat 500.
Since it’s only just been launched you’ll probably have to buy a new one – check out the Fiat 500 site for details.
There is some controversy about just how green LPG (liquid petroleum gas) is. It produces less CO2 than unleaded petrol, but less energy too. On the plus side, LPG costs less than petrol and is fairly readily available. There are plenty of places that will convert a petrol car to LPG. Online sellers and sources of advice include Go LPG and LPG Conversion Services.
Hybrid cars offer a combination of more than one power source – usually electricity and petrol. The Toyota Prius is the most famous example and it’s been round long enough to be readily available second hand. You’ll find plenty on general sites like Motors.co.uk, or you might want to contact a dealer such as Toyota World. There are loads more designs around these days, of course, including diesel hybrids such as the Peugeot 3008 HYbrid4, which won Diesel Car Magazine’s Best Eco Car 2011 award.
The two big problems with electric cars are their range and their cost. However, the former is likely to increase and the latter drop in coming years. If you can’t wait, and can get by with a car that will only offer limited mileage each day, then the choice is increasing. The G-Wiz is probably the most established electric car in the UK and you’ll find second hand and new examples at GoinGreen. Meanwhile many other brands are now available and mainstream manufacturers are pushing the electric concept – Nissan’s LEAF won World Car of the Year 2011 at the New York international motor show.
