Frugal Ideas For Families Just Starting Out
By Christopher Ciecierski

Plant the bulbs in clumps of three or five or seven or nine, always an odd number. Do dig a little compost into the soil before planting. Plant a vegetable garden and enjoy fresh food all season. Lots of local garden clubs around, members love to share seeds, plants, recipes, etc.

Paint your own modern art. Decoupage photos, paintings or magazine pictures over an old painting and create a collage. Paint and decorate the jar however you want. Fill the jar with love notes, song lyrics, pictures and anything else that you can think of that shows your affection

Create a folded wedding booklet using a word processing program (or desktop publishing program if you have one on your computer). Stick to two fonts (one serif like a script font and one sans serif like a gothic font) to give it a clean, elegant look.

Create some space in your closets and start ‘hoarding’ things that are at 50% to 80% off normal price (determine and build a normal price database in your mind). For example if you can get Colgate Toothpaste for $1.50 with a free toothbrush (9.2 oz), then buy 10 of them, since you will NEVER get that again.

Create checking or savings accounts with compound interest, and you can make money on those accounts.

Create some sausage rolls and have an instant appetizer to serve! You can munch on these while waiting for the pizza delivery.

Cut each paper towel into four squares. I make a stack of about 10 paper towels, then cut them into fourths. Cut out felt hearts or letters to glue on Valentine’s Day wishes. Use a different color scheme for a more masculine look. Cut sponge in 1/2 and keep in liquid. When drying clothes, remove sponge, squeeze out excess liquid and place in dryer with clothes.

Decorating the nursery is a favorite part of new baby preparations for many parents. Until it’s done, you just don’t feel like you’re ready to welcome your child into the world.

Decorate With Throw Blankets – October through February is the time of year when throw blankets come out to provide the extra comfort and warmth in the living room or den. If it’s a Sunday after noon nap or a curl up around the fireplace with a best seller in hand, throw blankets are always a welcome, cuddle luxury.

Plan menus that are practical and easy-to-cook to encourage eating at home. Make dining out a special treat that you’ll appreciate more. Plan at least four to five dinners for the week, based on what’s on sale in your store circular (most are available online). If possible, double those recipes and freeze the second for a complete leftover meal. Planning and organisation is a key factor here. Particularly if you want healthy yet frugal breakfasts for you and your family.

Remember, living frugally is not killing your desires – it’s about getting involved in the process of rational decision making and finding the best out of everything.
