Want to Be Wealthy? Tightwad Living is the Answer
By Tim Parker
The rich say it. The government says it, and financial experts across the world say it. There is only one way to get rich and that’s tightwad living.
Maybe you are ok living the live you have. Money has never driven you and having the newest luxury car is about as much of a priority to you as traveling the world on your private jet. I bet that you do have financial goals. You want to pay off your debt, provide your family with a comfortable life, and have money to, at the very least, help your son or daughter with college. Although you may have no dreams of being rich and live a lavish life, rich to you could mean getting the bills paid.
If your financial goals aren’t being realized, there can only be three explanations: Either you’re not making enough, your spending too much, or a combination of both. While we all think we’re underpaid, that is often not something that is quickly fixed so let’s look at the most common reason.
Let’s be honest. Nearly all of us spend too much money and a lot of that money is on “stuff.” Stuff that we want more than we need. Stuff that was marketed well and we decided that we had to have it. Stuff that we put on our credit cards and are now paying for each month.
The first rule of being rich (whatever your definition being) is tightwad living. Tightwad living means using coupons to buy your needs, rarely buying your wants, and never buying anything that you can’t afford to pay for in cash. Tightwad living means never living in debt. If the average person has more than $10,000 in credit card debt, that means that many people are paying more than $100 per month in interest alone. What would you do with an extra $1,200 per year?
Here are a few ideas to get you started with tightwad living:
Use coupons
Don’t eat out
Buy generics
Freeze your credit cards…literally.
Don’t buy new cars
Don’t buy luxury cars
Buy a home that fits in to your income
Brew your own coffee
Only pay for basic cable
Sign up for the minimum cell phone plan
Run outside and lift sandbags instead of a gym membership
Make extra money doing something that you enjoy
Have a relative or friend babysit your kids
Barter- in exchange for babysitting your children, do something for the babysitter
Make your own list and add up the potential savings. Put that towards your debts and before you know it, you will be debt free.

Tightwad Group, Come Join!
I’ve recently been granted to take over the Tightwad group, a long time Yahoo tightwad living group.
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/tightwad
The group’s owner had disappeared long ago, leaving the group to spammers posting yucky stuff. I have deleted a lot of messages and hopefully got rid of all the nasty ones.
We are wanting to jump start the group again, bring it back to life, to what it was intended for… tightwad tips, frugal living, budgeting, freebies, and coupons. So I am asking my readers here to join up and share their freebies, tightwad tips, frugal recipes, coupons, etc. Basically any and everything that pertains to tightwad living.
The group posts are moderated to keep the icky spam out.
So come on and join and spread the word to your friends!

When it comes to making homemade barbecue sauce, the process is pretty easy and you most likely have all of the ingredients on hand.
Why should you make it instead of buying it? By making your own sauce, you save money and you control the ingredients. Once you have prepared the sauce, you can use it right away or you can refrigerate it for up to 3 days in an airtight plastic or glass container.
Here is my family’s favorite BBQ sauce recipe which takes less than 10 minutes to prepare.
Barbecue Sauce
1 cup ketchup
1/4 cup Worcestershire sauce
1 cup hot water
1/4 cup white vinegar
1 tablespoon granulated sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1/2 teaspoon celery salt
2 tablespoons minced onions
1-2 tablespoons brown sugar
1/8 teaspoon of basil (optional)
In a large saucepan, combine the ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, water and vinegar. Cook over medium heat for 2 minutes. Stir in granulated sugar, salt, black pepper, celery salt, minced onions, basil and brown sugar. Simmer the sauce over low heat for 5 minutes. Once the sauce has finished cooking, it is ready to use.
Optional Flavorings: If you like your sauce sweet, increase the brown sugar by an additional tablespoon. If you like a little garlic taste to it, you can mince 1 clove of garlic and add it to your recipe. If you like it hot and spicy, you can add 1 teaspoon of hot sauce.
Suggested Uses: You can brush the sauce onto hamburgers and chicken for baking or grilling. This sauce is great on beef and pork ribs too.

During the summer gardening season, we always end up with an abundance of cucumbers, so we like to make our own fresh pickles and can them for future use.
Both of the following recipes use fresh cucumbers along with various other ingredients.
Classic Pickles
25 cucumbers, sliced
4 large onions, sliced
2 large peppers, sliced
1/2 cup canning salt
5 cups white vinegar
2 tablespoons mustard seed
1 teaspoon Tumeric
In a large kettle or large bowl, combine the sliced cucumbers, onions and peppers with the canning salt. Cover and let mixture sit for 4 hours, stirring once every hour. After 4 hours, drain the liquid from the bowl.
In a large kettle, combine the vinegar, mustard seed and Tumeric. Bring mixture to a boil and boil for 4 minutes. Reduce heat and stir in the cucumber, onions and peppers mixture. Simmer for 5 minutes on low. Ladle cucumbers into hot sterilized canning jars, wipe the rim clean and seal. Process in a water bath canner for 10 minutes.
Dill Pickles
8 cups tap water
4 cups white vinegar
2/3 cup canning salt
granulated sugar
garlic and dill to taste
10 cucumbers
alum lumps
In a large kettle, combine the water, white vinegar and canning salt. Bring this liquid to a rapid boil and boil for 10 minutes. Place cucumber spears, dill and garlic into your clean and hot canning jars. Add 1 tablespoon of granulated sugar to each jar. Using a ladle, spoon the hot liquid into your canning jars, leaving a 1/2″ head space. Add 1 pea sized lump of alum to each jar. Seal jars and process in your water bath canner for 15 minutes.
