Travel on the Cheap – Cheap Traveling

With fuel costs skyrocketing, you may think the farthest you can go for a vacation is the corner gas station. Not true! There are ways to travel inexpensively – whether it’s across the state or around the world. Here’s how:

Travel off-season

Sure, Arizona or Aspen in August may not be as appealing as, say, Maui in March, but the hotel rates can’t be beat! Look for travel dates right on the cusp of the high season so you can still enjoy great weather without the crowds or the costs. Hint: Ski resorts like Lake Tahoe, Vail, and Sun Valley are gorgeous in the summer months, too!

Go at the last minute

Many travel agents and websites specialize in offering last-minute getaway deals on hotels, cruises, vacation packages, and more. Sign up for email notifications from your favorite airlines, hotel chains, and discount travel websites like Travelocity.com. Try sites like FareCompare.com and let somebody else do the leg work for you!

Use those miles

Sign up for a mile-generating credit card where you receive credit for every dollar spent. Over time, you can save up for airline tickets, hotel rooms, or travel packages. Note: Make sure to pay off your balance each month, or you’ll soon waste any savings you have accrued from your freebies!

Camp

There are almost 10,000 campgrounds in the fifty United States, many of which are nearby popular attractions and all of which are relatively inexpensive. Further your savings by borrowing or renting your equipment and cooking your own food. Back to nature is not only trendy, it’s cheap. If you’re not a fan of tents, there are many state and national parks that offer cabins, too.

Stay local

“Stay-cations” are gaining momentum, with major news outlets covering the trend of staying local and enjoying the amenities in your own backyard. Local hotels are also suffering from economic belt-tightening and may be willing to give locals a discount on rooms. Many tourist attractions and amusement parks offer nearby residents lower rates and specials. You’ll also save on transportation, making your vacation dollars go even further.

Swap houses

Unlike the popular “Wife Swap” television show, the point of house swaps is not to put you in awkward or compromising positions, but to allow you to exchange your home with another family, either elsewhere in the US or overseas. Check out websites such as HomeExchange.com or HouseForSwap.com and browse what’s available.

If you think a vacation is off limits this summer, think again. There are many opportunities for frugal-minded folks such as yourself to take advantage of deep discounts and special deals before the summer is through!

If you love to travel and you’re often wishing that you could hop on a flight and go anywhere in the world, you’re probably always looking for a great bargain. There are lots of ways to travel on a tight budget and have a wonderful vacation. In fact, there are ways to travel for almost free, if you’re willing to put some time and energy into researching all of your options and taking advantage of your resources.

Finding a cheap flight can always be a challenge. Hotels are always more willing to bargain and have package deals and specials more often than they don’t, so chances are, you can find inexpensive ways to stay overnight. Flights however, are controlled by the airlines. There is usually little room for negotiation when you’re calling to make reservations. Calling the airline directly isn’t always the cheapest and wisest choice unless you have the extra money to spend or need a last minute flight because of an emergency. Instead, take advantage of your resources. If you have a credit card that allows you to accrue points, see if you can cash them in for a free or cheap flight. I mean, if you use your credit card, why not get something more out of it? There are lots of people who will never spend a single penny on a flight because they take advantage of their credit card miles and points. If you don’t like the idea of credit card debt, you can always have a plan to pay off everything in full each time your bill arrives. You get to keep the points or miles and you don’t carry a balance from month to month.

Another resource that most people have right in front of them is the internet. You can find cheap flights on almost all legitimate travel websites. There is a website called ‘cheapflights.com’ that would be a good starting point for you. But, don’t put any money down on the very first travel site that you stumble across. The next site may have it for a bit cheaper. Do keep in mind though that the price you find on one site today might change when you go back to book it the very next day. If you found a great price and you’re comfortable with what it will cost you, book it on the same day. If the price you see today isn’t too appealing, wait a few days. It might go up or it might go back down. Getting a cheap flight isn’t always a guarantee, but it might be easier to get a cheap flight when you do the proper homework.

Most airline companies offer rebates for return flight tickets with only a slight difference on a one way ticket. If you plan to return on a definite date, make sure buy return tickets ahead of time. Also, there are some instances where traveling on regular days is cheaper than traveling during weekends. Weekends are much busier than weekdays and the demand for airline tickets are higher. Thus prices are higher on certain dates where demand is also high. If you think it is advantageous for you to travel during weekdays and return on a next weekdays, you can grab really cheap airline ticket for sure.

Internet – The internet is pretty basic and it is already in front of your nose if you want to find really cheap airline ticket. While reading this, you can even start opening the links attached and find your way to a cheap airline tickets. Here you can research on several different discount ticket sites that offer really cheap airline tickets anywhere in the world. The trick actually lies in the prices of tickets on discount ticket sites which vary day in and day out. Oftentimes, these discount ticket sites offer the same type of ticket on the same day of the same destination with different prices. If you want to get really cheap airline ticket wherever you want to go, it pays to visit at least 3 discount ticket sites in the web and do a comparison.

Don’t Settle for Big Airline Companies – Big airline companies offer big service to big clients. They have more expensive ticket prices due to the amount of advertisement and marketing they incur in order to maintain their fame. Try not to fly with them. Instead, go for smaller airline companies which can provide good service at the same time cheaper airline ticket prices.

Keep your trip more flexible – If you are not on the rush and would not mind saving on money than getting to a destination as quick as possible, keep your options open. Again this would need an internet to work. You need to search for all the possibilities where you can compare ticket prices. Try to look for flights during midnight or connecting flights. Make a comparison against several others so you will discover a really cheap airline ticket that is right for your budget.

Plan to travel longer - Most of the time, it pays to take a bus from one city to another, and then take the flight from there than getting on a airplane directly on your city. If for example you are traveling from San Diego to Seattle. Try to take a bus From San Diego to Los Angeles then take a plane from L.A. to Seattle. Or, if you want to go a little further, ride a bus from San Diego to Sacramento, then take a plane there. Chances are you have saved a lot before you know it! These are only 5. There are more.
